Rediscovering Oneself
I have often told my students that for one to enjoy life, one needs to rediscover the basic and fundamental beliefs that constitute life. Life, as it is, is a joy. A life full of depression and sadness is not a valuable one. One needs to add value to life by going back to the basic teachings of one’s parents.
I’m a parent myself and I find it difficult to infuse basic moral and ethical teachings to my children. Nowadays, kids are exposed to various messages which confuse instead of elucidate. If you look at it, kids are a confused lot nowadays because of what they see and hear all around them. It’s hard for parents to impart the traditional teachings of the older generation because values from foreign media seep into the recesses of the Filipino kid’s minds.
Those who also impart these teachings are likewise, confused. That’s why it is important for parents also to go back to the basics and rediscover themselves as well.
The first thing one should do is rediscover how it is to be a Filipino. One can do that by being proud of one’s history. I’m currently writing the history of the Filipino People since I am an authorized historiographer myself. As soon as I finish this, I will share this with you.
Other methods of rediscovery includes going to historical places, to remind oneself of the works of the previous generation. Seeing those old walls, those historic places of struggle, those monuments which remind us of the sacrifices our forebears did for us to live now are excellent examples.
Going to mountainous regions where our impoverished people live in excruciating manner is also one good activity. Visiting museums like the National Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Manila is likewise, a very interesting and enlightening affair.
We are a great race. We have a very interesting history, the kind that inspires. Let’s use our resources to rediscover our culture, our values and our history so that, in the future, we will be proud to say that, indeed, we are a nation, not only a race.
