Pseudo Champ
Let’s admit it–Pacquiao is fast losing his strength. His bout yesterday showed his weakness as a fighter. He was’nt able to bring down Barrera. He bragged that he’ll knock down the 34-year old Mexican fighter. During the fight however, he nearly went down himself in the first few rounds. The thunderous blow inflicted to him by Barrera on the eighth round stunned and hurt the braggart. What saved Pacquiao from Barrera is the decision, not his fists. Pacquiao has been affected by his millions and his victories. Were it not for him being handled by Top Rank and Bob Arum, Pacquiao could have lost this fight.
Pacquiao should not even compare himself to the legendary Flash Elorde. Elorde is a gentleman, Pacquiao, a braggart. Elorde was truly a world champion. Pacquiao, well, is just a spectacle. Elorde really united the people. Pacquiao tries to, but millions see him as a weak model citizen.
Now, there are suggestions of him going to another, heavier weight division. Don’t think about it. Pacquiao would be eaten by more experienced, more savvy and stronger opponents and counter-punchers than his current opponents.
I am a Filipino and as nationalistic as other people around. However, it’s time for us not to delude ourselves with Pacquiao. One strong reminder—those who think that they’re invincible, the best and the strongest, they are the ones whom the gods wish to destroy.
