The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea for GMA
Desperate people do desperate things. A Tribune report said that the Philippine stock market plunged to a slight low due to alleged fears by the business community on an Erap conviction. Crap!
Obviously, Tribune has lost its impartiality. They have shown their real colors (as if they did’nt in the first place). There is no truth that the economy will be affected with this issue. Right now, the economy is resilient and strong enough to be seriously affected by ANY political issue. For one, it is dependent on overseas remittances. Second, foreign investments flow in the right places which are high-yielding, low risk investments like real estate. And third, businessmen are not concerned anymore with this issue.
Tribune is being used by pro-ERAP advocates, that’s as clear as day. Its creating a revolutionary situation out of nothing. You don’t force the creation of a revolutionary situation.
Revolutionary situations arise from a mix of so many factors, such as a strong dissent from the military, civil society, religious and what have you. There is a revolutionary situation if there is a genuine fragmentation among the population. Right now, there is none. You don’t need to be an expert to know this. People are doing their own businesses right now. People really want to move on. They are not affected by all of these things.
I am no GMA fan. In fact, I hate what these minions of GMA are doing. They are creating their own destruction by even answering these inane accusations coming from the Erap camp. GMA must not meddle with the Sandiganbayan decision.
Come to think of it, even Erap’s men are doing him harm. What if the Sandiganbayan issues a favorable decision? If the Erap camp says right now that Malacanang is exerting pressure for a conviction, they are unwittingly (or wittingly) destroying the credibility of an institution which could save (or condemn) Erap. If the Sandiganbayan do issue an acquittal, will they turn around and say that it was a triumph of justice? They already destroyed its credibility. Erap’s minions are subverting him.
What’s more, their subversion gives more ammunition to would-be destabilizers. Why?
Think about it. If Erap is acquitted by a “purely tainted” judicial body, pro-GMA hawks would use it to launch a “palace coup”. They would definitely use the Erap argument that the Sandiganbayan has already been tainted. They would attack Malacanan for having “succumbed” to pseudo-political pressure from the Erap camp. It is very easy for these people to say that the real reason for the acquittal was the pressure which Malacanang got from the Erap camp. Having said that, they would picture GMA as a lameduck president–a “weak” president incapable of stevedoring the nation during good economic times.
These hawks would create the impression that there are two presidents in power—the one in jail, the other “soon-to-be” inmate. If this is the case, then, it would very easy for these hawks to court the support of the US for a palace coup. A palace coup would then govern the country even after 2010, with GMA held hostage as a “ceremonial head”. And the real powers? You guessed it right–the Asingan boys.
