Why I still love Gringo and Laugh at Trillanes

Detained Navy officer Antonio Trillanes IV just filed his senatorial candidacy today. Known for being the leader of the failed Oakwood mutiny, Trillanes thought that he has attained the stature and respect which the people reposte to another coup leader, former Senator Gregorio Gringo Honasan.

Well, I must say, Trillanes is dreaming. He’s still a neophyte in the revolutionary struggle yet he thinks that he’s popular enough to merit the people’s trust. He has not proven anything, yet, he seems to think that what he did in Oakwood was enough to make him win an election or at least lead a people towards revolutionary victory. I am writing here ten things why I still love and respect Gringo and laugh at Trillanes’ delusions.

 1. Gringo at least made one successful coup d’etat—the 1986 EDSA Revolt. Trillanes, so far, has only one record—and a failed one—Oakwood mutiny.

  1. Gringo has proven himself to be a natural leader, an inspiration among many intellectuals, middle forces and soldiers because of his staunch ideological beliefs. Trillanes has inspired 300 men yet, so far, his main group has fragmented.
  2. Gringo has managed to be a legendary figure, escaping from his prison cell and making the lives of his pursuers hell for many months. In the case of Trillanes, he has been languishing in that prison cell for years now. If he’s a true revolutionary, he should have escaped by now.
  3. Gringo has the vision, Trillanes has his delusions.
  4. Gringo has the genuine heart for the common soldier and the masses. He has proven this, time and time again. Trillanes so far, has not been able to do anything for the direct benefit of the soldiers whom he professes to fight for.
  5. Gringo is a genuine caudillo. Trillanes still has to prove that he is what he’s saying to the people that he is.
  6. Gringo has his battle scars. His revolutionary record is etched in his entire body. Trillanes, well, growls in his cell. He has some scars right, just from mosquito bites.
  7. Gringo never waivered in his beliefs. He never compromised. However, when the right time came, when going to the Senate would make some of his dreams for the country a reality, he did. For Trillanes, he’s just what? 3 years in the revolutionary struggle? Yet, he now thinks that he’s wrong and the Establishment is right all along. By filing that COC, he now says that what he did was a wrong move. Well, my boy, you are definitely more wrong now than before.
  8. Gringo is method. Trillanes is all propaganda.
  9. Gringo is real. Trillanes is all dreams.
